Omega 3s is something that is very important from the time a women is pregnant. Eating food that has all nutritional factors is necessary when you are pregnant. One such essential thing is getting omega 3S in your diet. For healthy pregnancy, healthy diet is the most important thing. Baby relies completely on your food for fulfilling all kind of vitamin and mineral nutrition. Omega 3 rich foods are very much essential. There some factors that are needed to make your baby strong and healthy. Let us look in to some basic fact about Omega 3s and why is it necessary for your baby nutrition.

What is Omega 3s food?

Omega 3s is special kind of polyunsaturated fatty acid. Some of the main food in, which they are present, includes fish, game, seeds and plants. There are four types of fat necessary for your body to get and polyunsaturated fatty acids are one of those four types. It may be known as fatty acid but these are very much necessary for your body. They have the content that is good for mental as well as physical body. It is because of this that Omega 3s is also known as essential fatty acid. These are essential but are not produced in your body. You can easily get them by getting all essential food that has its presence.

Types of Omega 3s

Omegas 3s are essential fatty acids and there are three types of these acids. All these three types are necessary. This also helps in maintaining good functions for your body and your baby nutrition too.

EPA: This is also known as Eicosapentaenoic acid that is mainly found in fish and fish oil.

DHA: This is also known as Docosahexanoic acid is found in fish and this is very much essential in body.

ALA: this is also known as Alpha linolenic acid. This is found in seed, vegetables, vegetable oils etc. this fatty acid is first converted in EPA and then DHA.

Omega 3s is very important in pregnancy and for baby development

Let us understand why Omega 3s is necessary in pregnancy:

1) Growth of body: One of the main factors that Omega 3s is important is that it helps in well-mannered growth of a baby’s body. Importance of having Omega 3s rich food in past few decades have been seen and acknowledged. Omega 3s rich diet plays an important role in development of body physically as well as mentally. Growth of baby starts right from when it is in uterus and hence Omega 3s plays an important role in getting overall development of baby. The growth involves proper development of brain, forming the retina, and developing the full nervous system.

2) For health of pregnant woman: Omega 3s is also very much important for proper health and well-being of pregnant women as it gives complete baby nutrition. When you continuously take omega 3s rich food, it reduces any chance of developing preeclampsia. There is no chance of postpartum depression due to intake of omega 3s rich diet. In fact, it also helps in minimisation in chance of preterm labour.

3) There can be many issues when Omega 3s rich diet is not provided in pregnant women: when there is deficiency of Omega 3s rich diet in any pregnant women’s diet then surely many disadvantages are there. This deficiency is not only bad for pregnant women but for baby too. A recent research has been carried out between babies who were fed with omega 3s rich food while they were in womb to babies who were deficient with this. Result came out that showed babies who were fed Omega 3s rich diet had rich growth.

When you take omega 3s rich diet then the baby takes it from the placenta cover and this helps the baby to grow and develop easily, when you do not take any external source of Omega 3s rich diet then the baby starts taking it from your own stores. These stores might be from brain, or any other part. So when baby starts taking all these sources from brain it leads to loss of some percentage of your brain cells.

4) Omega 3s helps pregnant women as well as baby in long run. Baby who takes Omega 3s rich diet since the time they are in womb have greater visual activity and advanced attention spans. While the children who are not fed with these since the baby are in womb, do not have much of this are not exposed to such developments.

5) Omega 3s diet helps baby to grow faster than the baby who is not exposed with Omega 3s diet. These babies develop two months faster than those who do not take these rich diets.

6) When a child takes on Omega 3s rich diet then it results in lesser developmental problem. In fact, there is less behavioural problem too. In fact, the pregnant women have lesser chances of breast cancer and prostate cancer as omega 3s ic sonidered proper baby nutrition food.

7) Omega 3 is also support you to development of good and functioning eye of baby.

8) With normal intake of omega 3s rich diet, there are reduction in any chances of premature labour and delivery.

9) When there is good intake of omega 3s rich diet it helps in cognitive development. It also gives good learning ability to children.

When is the effective time to take Omega 3s rich diet?

Now after you know the importance of Omega 3s rich food intake, you may want to ask as when is the proper time when it is necessary to feed yourself with Omega 3s rich food? Omega 3s is something that should be taken regularly just as any other food. In fact, it is not necessary that you should take this food only when you get pregnant. You must maintain a good health before you is pregnant and hence it is important for you to get good omega 3s rich diet. You may take it from earlier times too.

It is advised that you must undertake at least 250 mg of omega 3 regularly. However, when you are in final trimester, omega 3 oils become very important for you. This is because it is during final trimester time when the baby starts to form 70% of your brain development. In fact, this becomes essential for full development of nervous system. Therefore, it is necessary to be precautious with it.

Omega 3s rich diet

Some of the rich sources of Omega 3s rich diet that gives proper baby nutrition and it includes following:

Omega 3 fish oil supplements

Oily, cold water fish

Walnut oil and walnuts

Soybeans and pumpkin seeds

Purslane and Hemp seeds

Canola oil

Fortified eggs and dark leafy green vegetables

Although all major types of fishes are healthy for you and your body development but still there are many fish that contain higher level of mercury. You need to check out those special types of fish that have higher levels of PCBs and mercury. Hence, you need to check out. In fact, many supplements are there which are made from fish livers. You need to avoid all such supplements that are made from fish livers.

Fish is very important source of omega 3s diet for any pregnant women as it helps in providing complete baby nutrition care. Fish has some of the prime sources that help in development of baby easily. So consumption of omega 3s rich diet becomes very essential for you and your baby. These are the best sources that are good for overall development of your body. It helps sin reduction of hypertension, improve brain function, promote good cardiovascular heart etc.

These days there are many sources through which you can get omega 3s rich diet. There is special pill form that helps in providing you Omega 3s. Omega 3s is also said to be brain food as it is most important for development of brain apart from cardiac and circulatory development. Many modern diets are not having these omega 3s sources hence you need to get to the original sources of omega 3s that provides you with best development issue.

DHA is very essential fatty acid as that is responsible for eye and brain development of body. There are many benefits of DHA and all these help your body to function well in getting good baby nutrition care.

However, you need to be very precautious when you get your own source of omega 3s. This is because Pregnancy is a very sensible issue and any kind of negligence may affect the baby. Therefore, it is necessary to carry on good research with all food that you are giving to pregnant women. Checking with all the advisory when you are taking in fish and other sources is a very important step. More and more information will surely help you to come out with good baby nutrition care. Remember if you eat well, baby is healthy. Baby nutrition care is a must and it can be done with baby nutrition foods easily.

The rudiments of baby nutrition care do not just end with the birth of the child. They actually started before the child is born. If the parent has not been eating well or eating substances that are specifically not recommended then the child will pay the price in terms of the birth defects and the other sundry problems that can happen to them all the time. The quaint phrase that someone is “eating for two” has never been more relevant than when a woman is pregnant. Everything that the mother eats will have some bearing on the development of the foetus. The diligent parents will create some sort of roadmap to ensure that they are only eating the right foods and only in the right quantities. The beneficial nutrients should include the following:

A diet that is rich in folic acid: The parent will need about 800 micro grams of folic acid if they are to meet the requirements of baby nutrition. The amount should be increase to one hundred micrograms when the parent realises that they are carrying a child. The common name for this element is vitamin B and it is crucial to the physiological development of the baby. It might be the key to preventing abnormalities in the child and might also prevent the premature births that can be very distressing for the parent. The sources of the folic acid include citrus fruits, green vegetables, Folate products, cereals and peas. There are some brands of milk that are also fortified with this nutrient.

DHA is essential for child development: The parent should make every effort to ensure that the unborn child has access to omega 3 fatty acids. The sources for these sorts of nutrients include fresh water fish, canola, walnuts, flaxseed, certain oils, meat, cows fed on grass, and chickens that have been fed on flaxseed. The benefits of DHA can complement some of the other measures that have been taken to ensure that the baby nutrition care is taken seriously. The DHA will be one third of the total weight of the child’s brain. It will determine the retention and focus that is required for daily living. It is said that babies born by mothers that consume fish oil will be more intelligent than those in different circumstances. In fact their IQs will be about six to ten times higher and they will respond to academic training very easily. DHA can prevent the onset of post partum depressions as well as mood swings.

Iron is the building block for the body: The mother will require plenty of iron when they are pregnant. There are some studies that the iron content has to be doubled in order to cope with the rigors of baby nutrition. The mother shares a blood supply with the baby and therefore it makes sense that they will need the iron to bolster the blood supply. Without the right amount of iron, anaemia will kick in. The weight of the baby will also be impeded. The immune system will become less effective and the baby will be faced with other problems.

The role of food in conceiving eggs during the ovulation cycle: The food that is eaten will have an impact on the possibility of conception. The eggs need protein. An unhealthy mother is not able to fully get all the hormones in the right working order. They are also trying to conserve their nutrients and therefore will not tolerate the pregnancy. It is imperative that the mother is well fed. She might develop cravings for certain things in order to supplement the nutrients that she is missing. Wherever possible these cravings should be indulged.

The BMI has an impact on conception: The healthy weight range is the best place to conceive the baby. People that have a BMI over 25 will find that the ovulation and egg production is affect. The hormones are also not in the right place. This is the beginning of habits that might negatively affect the baby nutrition at later stages. Diabetes during pregnancy is a real problems and it can also affect men in as much as they will have reduced sperm production. At the same time people that are underweight should not expect that they will have an easier time. It can also reduce the ability that they have to conceive. Those that have a BMI under 18 will not have sufficient hormone levels. In fact they might find that the ovulation and periods stop. These people are likely to have very low weight and premature babies.

Variety is the key to good baby nutrition care: The parent should endeavour to ensure that their diet is quite varied in its provisions. The varied diet is easier to follow because it has things of interest. For example they should look for the proteins from peas and beans as well as pulses. Lean mean is excellent for this as well as fish and past. It should be a requirement that the parent can eat two portions of oily fish each week. This will give them the sort of variety that is required to meet the nutritional requirements of their pregnancy.

Carbohydrates and mineral should be part of the baby nutrition program: The consumption of brown rice, potatoes and pasta can deliver carbohydrates. These will give the parent and child energy. The consumption of fruit might also cover this requirement. There should be a good showing of calcium which is obtained from leafy green vegetables, seeds and certain nuts. Iron can be found in the red meats, dried fruit, pulses, bread and certain fortified cereals.

The consumption of vitamin A should be regulated: Of course it is a good idea to have some vitamin A in the diet. However too much of a good thing can cause problems. It will impact on the proper development of the baby. Parents are advised to avoid liver and liver products. They should also not take supplements for vitamin A. Instead they should find the foods that contain the nutrient naturally. Therefore there will be limited opportunities to take too much. Some of the foods that might be avoided include marlin, swordfish and shark. Tuna ought to be regulated. All these foods contain far too much mercury that might affect the nervous system of the developing baby. Part of baby nutrition care is to keep away from foods that appear to be harmful to the growing baby.

Access to vitamin D is essential for the prospective parent: This is simply received from the appropriate sun exposure. At the same time the parent needs to use some sort of sunscreen in order to keep skin cancer at bay. There are supplements that can provide this vitamin in the right quantities. A walk in the sun will also help the parent to exercise a bit and build the strength that will be required for the birth and carrying the pregnancy. Some women come to the birth bed when they are simply too weak to push. They will then be assisted by the professionals. The problem comes when they give birth without the support of professionals.

The avoidance list for pregnancy

Good baby nutrition care requires that certain elements of the diet are kept to the minimum. This will ensure the health of both the mother and child:

Soft cheese is not a good idea. Brie has an appalling smell so most pregnant women will not like it anyway. Goat and blue cheese is also not a good idea. These cheeses as well as Pates can contain Listeria. This is a bacterium that can harm the baby. On the other hand hard cheeses such as feta, Cheddar, ricotta, mascarpone, cream cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella and cheese spreads are acceptable.

The consumption of raw or partly cooked eggs is also not a good idea. They are likely to contain Salmonella. Homemade mayonnaise also requires skills that are often outside the capabilities of the parents unless they are prepared to risk some serious illness in the process.

The prospective parent should avoid raw meat because it harbours serious bacteria and viruses. A strong bout of food poisoning is the last thing that the prospective mum needs at this delicate part of her life. Meals should be cooked properly and in hygienic conditions.

Raw shellfish is a no go area for expectant mothers. However they can happily enjoy the food if it is properly cooked. The baby nutrition is all about eating the right foods but not in a way that is harmful to the baby.

One of the most irresponsible things that a parent can do is to consume alcohol when they are pregnant. It is the height of negligence and can cause the baby to have serious defects. Caffeine is also not a good thing because it has been known to reduce the birth weight. Some mothers comfort themselves with a few studies that minimise the impact of the harm. However alcohol is just a bad idea at this stage.

A common rule is that adult women require around 2100 calories daily, whereas pregnant women need 400 calories more each day. Of all the calories, 10% ought to come from protein sources. Protein is present in eggs, meat, dairy products, beans and fish.

Nearly 35% calories have to be from fat sources, such as from nuts, dairy products and butter and the remaining percentage of calories has to come from carbohydrates that are richly found in rice, pasta and potatoes. It is extremely important that pregnant women receive folic acid in sufficient quantity, which ensures proper nervous system of the developing baby. It is obtainable from rice, orange juice, green vegetables and fruits.

Intake of iron is also important for pregnant mothers. It guarantees enough production of blood for nourishment of the placenta. It is obtainable from whole-grain breads, berries and dark-green vegetables. If women feel that there is lack of iron in their food, then they may take iron supplements to make up for this deficiency. It is advisable that pregnant women do not consume more vitamin A, as it may cause damage to the embryo.

Pregnant women need to eat sensibly from the initial stage of their pregnancy, so that they deliver healthy babies without any complications. They may resolve any queries as such through asking their doctors, who may offer valuable nutrition tips for pregnant women. Pregnant women notice a change in their energy levels and well-being all through the nine months of their pregnancy. They may do little bit of exercise to deliver the babies safely.

Where pregnancy is concerned, nutrition indeed plays a vital role. Below are some additional nutrition tips for pregnant women, which they need to follow before, throughout and post pregnancy.

Additional Tips:

1.	It is vital that women have a Body Mass Index between 20 and 30 for getting pregnant and for being healthy.

2.	Few months before a woman conceives, she needs to build up her immune system well through quality nutrition and proper exercise for preparing her body to get hold of healthy pregnancy.

3.	Pregnant women also need to increase the intake of vitamin B12, zinc, vitamin D, Folic acid and magnesium.

4.	The initial few weeks post conception are extremely crucial, since here the internal organs develop in a woman’s body. Energy needed for creating the vital systems of a baby is only achievable through nutrients present within the circulatory system. Exercise and diet both are important during these stages.

5.	During the early pregnancy stages, placenta in women does not form due to which babies show some deficiencies in growth. Women need to bear in mind that whatever they eat is bound to have an effect on the growth of their babies.

6.	It is better to increase calorie intake by about 200 counts daily in the final trimester.

7.	It is equally good to consume enough riboflavin that is essential for tissue development.

8.	Post pregnancy, the metabolism increases due to breastfeeding. Here, eating healthy and at short intervals is a good idea. Women may feel as if they are consuming a ton. However, the body’s metabolism is fired up to such an extent that numerous women discover that they lose much of the weight gain at this time.

9.	It is advisable for women pick up an exercise program once again after four to eight weeks of delivery while they continue to eat nutritious food.

Almost all expectant mothers know that staying properly nourished all through their pregnancy is indeed necessary. Below are few more baby nutrition tips for pregnant women:

Few More Nutrition Tips for Pregnant Women:

1.	Eating an apple daily saves pregnant women and their babies from asthma. Research shows that women who eat an apple regularly that too during their pregnancy days save them and their babies from asthma to a great extent. Studies note that those mothers, who consumed apples daily in their pregnancy tenure showed no symptoms of asthma such as the wheezing.

2.	Women may eat bananas to reduce swelling. For pregnant women, who suffer from edema, it is good for them that they eat bananas. Potassium present in bananas helps in reducing the swelling of feet and legs.

3.	Women may also eat chocolates if they wish to deliver happy and healthy babies. Medical reports reveal that intake of a little quantity of chocolate daily during pregnancy leads to delivering happier babies. While many women may crave for more chocolates as an excuse, it has to be noted that merely a small quantity is enough for satisfying the cravings.

4.	It is indeed excellent for pregnant women to include skimmed milk in their diet. For women who are accustomed to drinking semi-skilled or skimmed milk and just cannot stay away from it, they may have it. Both semi-skimmed and skimmed milk are rich in calcium and are less in fat. It means women may include them in their diet and continue enjoying a nutritious diet, which is helpful for the developing baby as well.

Overall, by following all the nutrition tips for pregnant women, they may deliver their babies safe and sound. The tips emphasize not only on women’s nutrition alone, but also on baby nutrition care. Most important to reap success in acquiring a highly nutritious diet during pregnancy is knowing about the proper intake of food right from the beginning. Women need to concentrate a lot on their nutrition and keep away from foods that might have adverse effects on their health, which may in turn, lead to poor health of their babies.

The Baby Food Bible: A Complete Guide to Feeding Your Child, from Infancy On

Unhealthy food is everywhere–colorfully packaged, cheap, and full of fat, calories, and sodium. It’s no wonder childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the last thirty years. As a result, by the time most people reach adulthood, they’re already wired to overeat.

Family nutrition expert Eileen Behan posits that good nutrition and good eating habits start on day one. The Baby Food Bible features a guide to more than 100 foods recommended for infants and toddlers based on the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, tells parents when to introduce these foods into a child’s diet, and emphasizes the importance of setting healthy eating routines that center on family meals at the dining room table–the perfect time to build good habits. In a clear, accessible style, Behan describes how to:

• foster an appetite for a healthy variety of new foods (there’s more to life than string cheese)
• avoid everyday pitfalls, such as relying on too much fruit juice or labeling your child a picky eater
• establish a meal and snack schedule (children will feel more secure and eat better)
• decipher the many labels and ingredient lists at the grocery store
• prevent and treat common food-related issues, including allergies, colic, choking, and iron deficiency
• encourage the foods that will discourage chronic disease, from high blood pressure to heart disease

The Baby Food Bible also features an alphabetized index–from apples to zucchini–that explains how to buy, store, prepare, and serve more than 100 foods, with delicious recipes for every meal, wholesome snack ideas, and advice for eating out. There’s no better way to ensure your child will grow up to have a happy and healthy life!

Top 100 Baby Purees: 100 Quick and Easy Meals for a Healthy and Happy Baby Reviews

Review by Nicole James:

I am so glad I bought this book; it agrees with my philosophy about shaping children’s palates early, using whole foods, and organic eating in general. The recipes are easy and delicious, and give you ideas for all the way into toddlerhood. I love the inclusion of recipes using meat, fish, and chicken. My daughter has loved everything I have made from this book so far; my husband and I have even eaten a few- with salt and seasoning added for adult taste- and enjoyed them.

I do, however, agree with Lynn W.- USE WISDOM with certain recipes, since the author does not seem to follow the AAP’s recommendations about when to introduce certain foods, and seems to lack a current understanding about food allergies in children. There are lots of recipes with cow’s milk, tomatoes, and citrus, for example, for very young babies.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource.

Review by E. Gonzalez:

My daughter is turning eight months this week. She is not eating textured foods yet or finger foods, but she is getting bored with one-ingredient foods and bland food like just sweet potatoes by themselves, so I’m starting to make her some varied purees with different ingredients and spices. Hence, why I ordered this book!

What I was expecting to find was exactly what the title said…100 puree recipes. Not a book divided into ages with age-appropriate recipes. The first section tells you how to steam and puree vegetables and fruits. Then moves on to 6 month old foods, and then 7-9 month foods and then 9-12 month recipes which aren’t even purees. They look more like recipes I would make for my husband and I, not that it’s a bad thing at all, because we want her eating what we’re eating in a few months!

I’m not returning the book, because some of the recipes look awesome and I can’t wait to try them, but it’s not what I was looking for at all when I ordered it. It really should be retitled to something other than Top 100 Baby Purees when that’s not really what it is.

But the BEST part of this book that is so different than other books is that it has some great puree recipes for chicken and beef and fish, and I haven’t been able to find that anywhere else. And the recipes call for onion and garlic, which are two ingredients that my husband cook a lot with, so it’s going to be a good cookbook for us. So, three stars for the quality of the book and the ease of the recipes which I can tell already by reading them since I’m an experienced cook, but a two star deduction for the bad title.

This article was written by referring to Yahoo Answers.

Many pregnant women are concerning about their pregnancy. A question has been brought up in a discussion :

I’m 11 weeks pregnant and for the past three weeks, I have been throwing up everyday. Everything I eat. Especially when I eat meat. I’m trying to eat everything I can to support my baby nutrition but my stomach can’t handle any food. Is there anything I can do from throwing. Is my baby going to be okay?

Here are the comments and suggestions :

Your baby will be fine….make sure you are not getting dehydrated and are drinking alot also try small meals at first its good to try and eat healthy but try eating what sounds good not what you think is the best choice for the baby this does not mean just cookies and cakes but you will be surprised how you will pick something that is healthy with my last daughter all i wanted was beans and cheese at first and this is full of protein and calcium and i ate it everyday for like 3 weeks my Doctor said it was fine and my baby was great and as the throwing up got less and less i added in all the other foods! so try what sounds good and hopefully it will work!! good luck.

welcome to pregnancy.. you baby will be fine though eat a lot of fruit and crackers!

I don’t usually recomend meds but I was sick like you too, I threw up at LEAST 10 times a day and unfortunately if you are that sick it can be harmful to the baby because if you are not getting enough nutrition neither is the baby. Ask your doctor about a medicine called Zofran. It really worked wonders for me and I didn’t throw up once after I got on it. It is also very important that you take your pre-natal vitamins and if they make you sick like they did me take them at night with a small snack. Also try eating foods that are high in floic acid, cereal has alot of folic acid in it. It is VITAL for a baby to develope. Just a tip – grapes really made my stomache feel better.

Ok several things you could try. Keep in mind though that it is different for every woman who is pregnant.
1. Anything that is ginger or mint. I ate those andes mints all the time for my nausea and they really helped. Or tea.
2. Try eating something really plain like crakers or bread before you get out of bed in the morning. This puts something in your stomache to help fight the nausea. Sometimes, morning sickness is just because your stomache is completely empty.
3. Try toning down the spices and variety of your food. A certain spice may be making the nausea worse. Sometimes its something like milk that could be causing it.
4. Avoid strong smells. Not just strong food smells either. Whenever I smelled a hint of Pine-Sol, I got sick.
5. Eat something right before bed and take your prenatal vitamin then.
6. Graze all day. Don’t eat “meals”, just kind of munch all the time. Basically, spread your food out throughout the day. This will help when you get farther along and have less room for your stomache. After a few bites my last few weeks I felt like I swallowed a rock. I got very used to constantly eating.
If it gets really bad, where you can’t keep anything down, then go to your doctor. You need to keep hydrated and get enough nutrients right now. This is one of the key times during the pregnanacy where the baby is growing by leaps and bounds. So you need to keep yourself healthy. I also ate tums all the time. Should have invested in them when I was pregnant. They are one of the very few medicines you can take, and they give you extra calcium too!

You might have a condition called ‘hypermesis gravidarum’. http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/naus… Has more information about it that might help you. I’m sure your baby will be fine.

I had morning sickness the first 5 1/2 months of pregnancy and the only thing that helped with the nausea was ginger ale and sour patch kids. Keep taking your pre-natal vitamin at a time when you feel the least amount of nausea.
I was told that any food in the beginning is better than no food at all and not to worry too much about the nutritious content. This is because the baby is first priority in your body and any kind of nutrients from any food will go to your baby first and you will be the one who is deprived from the nutrients.
Also keep drinking your water too. Hope this helps!

Ahhh… the joys of ‘morning sickness’. I had it really bad in my first trimester too. The good news is that it usually wears off by the second trimester, although not always. Have you talked to the doctor? Mine ended up writing me a prescription because I was getting dehydrated. Also, is it possible that you had an urinary tract infection? Pregnant women are more susceptible to them and they can make you throw up alot too. Good Luck!
Oh and by the way, the baby will be fine. My doctor said its common for women to actually lose weight during the first trimester and that the baby will get everything it needs from you.

The baby gets everything he needs from you, he doesn’t care whether or not you are eating well …. you have all the vitamins and minerals stored in your body and he will just suck it up. That is what my doctor told me, I was sick for the most of my pregnancy and I kept loosing weight, although I tried to eat well, I couldn’t keep anything besides crackers.. and the baby is completely fine {and big, too!}. So good luck, hope it won’t last as long as mine sicknesses did…

Some pregnant women may be advised or choose to restrict milk consumption and may not take appropriate supplements. We hypothesized that maternal milk restriction during pregnancy, which can reduce intakes of protein, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin D, might represent a health risk by lowering infant birth weight.

Milk is an important source of vitamin D, calcium, riboflavin, protein and energy during pregnancy, yet many women choose or are advised to avoid drinking milk for a variety of reasons, including the prevention of allergies in their children. Limiting milk intake compromises the quality of the maternal diet; women who avoid milk may not obtain adequate levels of vitamin D, calcium, protein or riboflavin. Milk restriction is a risk factor for pregnancy-associated hypertension. Low vitamin D intake is associated with neonatal rickets and decreased birth weight. Inadequate consumption of riboflavin is associated with decreases in weight, length and head circumference of babies at birth.

Although most nutrients in milk may be replaced from other foods or with supplements, vitamin D is found in few commonly consumed foods except for milk fortified with the vitamin. Dermal conversion of the precursor cholecalciferol to activated vitamin D is a seasonally unreliable source, particularly when the exposure of skin to sunlight is limited, and may not compensate for low nutritional intake. Under optimal conditions, 15 minutes of daily exposure of the hands and face to sun is required to produce adequate vitamin D, but this conversion is reduced by the prolonged winter season at more polar latitudes, by use of sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) above 8, and by ozone air pollution. People whose skin pigmentation is dark are more vulnerable than others to insufficient vitamin D conversion.

According to a study, women whose daily consumption of milk during pregnancy was 1 cup (250 mL) or less consumed less protein and vitamin D. As a result, they gave birth to smaller babies than did mothers who drank more milk. The conclusion is every 1-cup increase in daily milk consumption increased birth weight by 41 g; 0.000001g increase in daily vitamin D intake increased it by 11 g.

Clinicians should be alert to the effects of milk restriction and its associated reduction in vitamin D intake, and encourage pregnant women to maintain milk consumption. Adequate intake of vitamin D is especially important during winter months.

Babies needs iron for proper growth and development of their entire bodies, in particular their rapidly growing brains. When babies are anemic, they may show delays in normal development. In this case, a baby is at a critical stage in intellectual and psychomotor development between nine and 24 months and it is very important to avoid iron deficiency at this critical stage. The long-term effects of iron deficiency are still being studied, but evidence indicates that the nutrient is important for developing a healthy brain. A lack of iron could lead to emotional and behavioral problems and lower IQs.

Iron is a mineral that makes up an important part of hemoglobin, the substance in blood that carries oxygen throughout the body. Iron also carries oxygen in muscles, helping them function properly. Without an adequate amount of iron, the hemoglobin cannot carry enough oxygen to body tissues. The result is iron deficiency anemia with symptoms of tiredness and weakness. Infants who do not get enough iron can develop iron deficiency anaemia. This can cause a very serious illness called infant botulism.

Breast milk is the best source of iron for baby. There are sufficient quantities of iron in breast milk so that generally no supplementation of iron is necessary. However, at 4-6 months, the baby’s iron stores become depleted and the iron in breast milk will no longer be sufficient to prevent anemia.

In this case, iron fortified cereals provides the necessary iron levels in order to meet nutritional needs for baby aged six months and up. Most rice cereals provide the recommended daily amount of iron for your baby. According to a research, the low rates of iron deficiency anaemia in Canada and the USA are thought to be partly a result of the wide-spread use of commercially available iron fortified cereals

On the other hand, if you are not breastfeeding, provide your baby with iron-fortified formula milk. Your baby needs iron-fortified formula milk until his first birthday. Babies do not need solid foods until they are 6 months old.

From 6 months, iron-containing pulses (peas, beans, lentils), green leafy vegetables, meat, poultry and eggs can be introduced. Adding these foods daily will help babies get their necessary iron. The green leafy vegetables are also rich in vitamin C, in combination with a good iron source will help your baby’s body absorb more iron.

For the first 12 months of life, there are only two types of milk that you should use to feed your baby, breast milk or infant formula milk (unless you are recommended otherwise by a doctor). Any other type of milk, such as cow’s milk, or goat’s milk, will not satisfy your baby’s nutritional needs, and should not be given to babies under one year of age

In this case, breast milk or infant formula milk supplies all the nutrition an infant needs in the first few months. Infant formula milk also contains the lipids DHA and ARA, nutrients found naturally in mother’s milk that supports infant mental and visual development.

Nowadays, the quality of infant formula milk has been improved by adding substances beneficial to the infant health, such as nucleotides, calcium, iron and vitamins. Addition of such substances in infant milk seems to promote a beneficial intestinal microflora to newborns by lowering the buffering capacity of the milk. Requirements for vitamins depend on the intake of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and amino acids. Iron-fortified infant formulas have actually been credited for the declining incidence of anemia in infants.

Many breastfeeding mothers are anxious as to whether or not her baby is getting enough milk. Mothers who give their child infant formula milk don’t have this concern. Therefore, many mothers choose a combination of breastfeeding and feeding with infant formula milk.

Breastfeeding is the best choice for the mothers. Nevertheless, infant formula milk which has been added the essential nutrition is an only alternative way for the mothers who do not have enough breast milk to feed her baby.

What is DHA? Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid derived from alpha-linolenic acid. It is a nutrient that has been studied for its role in heart, brain and eye health. Although it is found in most tissues throughout the body, the highest concentrations of DHA are in the brain, nervous system and the retina of the eye, and it helps support normal development in these areas. According to a research, high concentrations of DHA are found in the cerebral cortex of the brain. The brain is 60% fat, and DHA is the most abundant fatty acid in the brain, comprising 25-35%. DHA is found in even greater concentrations in the retina, i.e. 50-60%.

DHA plays an important role in cerebral development, especially during the crucial period of fetal development and infancy. Pregnant mothers transfer DHA directly to the fetus to support rapid brain and retina development of the infant. Studies have shown that DHA plays a major role in the mental development of infants and supports the mental function of children and adults throughout life. Low DHA levels have been linked to low brain serotonin levels which again are connected to an increased tendency to depression, suicide, and violence.

The best source of DHA for a baby is breast milk. A recent study found that breast fed children performed significantly better in cognitive and academic tests compared to children who were not breast fed. In fact, DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in breast milk.

Maternal diet influences the level of DHA in breast milk. A study by the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas found that DHA supplements of 200 mg daily double the DHA content of nursing mothers’ milk relative to those who received placebo. The newborn baby must also continue to get enough DHA in breast milk or milk formula immediately after birth. Concentrations of DHA in breast milk have decreased by 50 percent in Canada and Australia over the past 15 years, according to studies.

An intake of approximately 300 mg DHA/day during lactation is considered as a reasonable target for ensuring the elevation of DHA in breast milk to at least 0.35% of total fatty acids. After the baby is born, if the mother is breastfeeding, the amount of DHA in breast milk will depend again on her dietary intake of this nutrient. DHA is found in the diet in high amounts in fatty fish (like tuna, mackerel, anchovies, salmon, herring, sardines) and in flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, canola oil, fish oil, and walnut oil.

A study concluded that the presence of DHA in breast milk explains why breast fed babies have a cognitive advantage over babies fed with infant formula containing no DHA. The study found that the breast fed children demonstrated an 8 point intellectual advantage when they were administered standard IQ tests.

Pregnant women need a variety of foods, from dairy products to cereals and fruits, to ensure that their baby gets the nourishment it needs. Most women gain some weight during pregnancy, and this is desirable, since your body is creating new tissues and helping the baby grow.

The great news about nutrition during pregnancy is that you have the ability to play a little part in your child’s destiny. By eating right and feeding yourself and your fetus all the necessary nutrients, you can take control of your child’s future health and set a strong foundation that will give you reason to be confident in a healthy infant, healthy toddler and healthy child.

In this case, the need for iron during pregnancy is greater than before, since the blood cells of the baby are also being formed. This also helps prevent fatalities caused by excessive bleeding during childbirth. As a result, a pregnant woman will go into the postnatal period as a healthier person, better placed to face the challenges of new motherhood.

In addition, due to pregnancy, your body is making so much extra blood, that you could become anemic without the help of extra iron. This extra iron supports the extra blood in your system and helps with the growth of the placenta and the fetus. Remember, your baby will take what it needs first to develop and grow, and therefore, your body may suffer if you’re not getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals needed throughout pregnancy. Routine blood tests you take throughout your pregnancy will verify whether your hemoglobin levels are normal. If you do become mildly anemic, don’t worry about your baby. The pregnancy anemia can be detected through blood tests.

The recommended foods which are rich in iron are such as lean red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans and lentils. On the other hand, vitamin C can help your body to absorb the iron in your diet, so drinking plenty of orange juice will also help prevent you from becoming anemic. Tea and coffee make it difficult for your body to absorb iron, so it’s best to cut down on these drinks or avoid them altogether. To help your body absorb iron you should combine these foods with those rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits or juice, tomatoes, broccoli or cabbage.

It is recommended that pregnant women avoid eating liver as although this is rich in iron it may have adverse health effects during this sensitive time. The red grape juice and prune juice had profound inhibitory effects on iron bioavailability. It is suggested that individuals in need of optimal iron absorption should avoid red grape and prune juice or at least vary the types of juices consumed.
